Homesteading & Permaculture

We practice Sustainable living

At the studio and homestead we practice sustainable living.  I approach things in the garden and kitchen with the same creativity I do in the studio. Things happen seasonally in the garden as well as the kitchen.  If there is something you want to learn you just need to ask.  I will let you know when it can be put on the schedule.  Since I am working all the time on making and growing, it is a matter of syncing schedules, harvest time and materials.   The class can be set up as one-on-one or as a group.

Day in the Kitchen

Anything is possible.  I create small batch jams, jellies, and marmalades from things in my garden.   I create them with little to no sugar.  I am not a fan of super sweets and I find the less sugar you use the more you taste the fruit.  I make grape jelly, using grapes in my yard, with no sugar. It tastes like grapes off the vine.  I call it  “just grape”.   I use the canned fruit in my breads and muffins as oil replacement.   Breads and English muffins are made monthly.   Kombuchas, Ginger and Turmeric teas and sodas are always  fermenting.  Sauerkraut, homemade spices and teas are staples in the house.

Group Experience Avalible

If you are interested in a group kitchen experience I would suggest tamale making,  spring rolls or meat pies.  In an event everyone helps create large batches and takes them home to freeze if their family doesn’t eat them all by the next day.  These events are great fun and allow for lots of socializing and friendship building.

Learn to operate a no waste kitchen

My kitchen is what I like to call a no waste kitchen.  I use everything.  My pepper scraps (jalapeño and bell) are collected and dried to make mixed pepper spice.  My bones are collected to make broths.   By the time something goes into compost it has been used to the last drop.

During the spring, summer and fall I spend about 1-2 hours a day in the yard.  For the most part I actually am growing gardens that self manage with no weeding.   My ground covers are mints and other edibles.   I propagate plants regularly.   I have things to harvest through out the year.  I collect seeds and have a great seed library.

Day in the Garden is great for kids

“Day in the garden”is a good experience for young kids.   I created a field trip for the boys and girls club.  They visited the studio and garden. We collected sticks and they made weaving using natural materials.  We had a honey tasting event.  They got to learn about composting and everyone held a worm.  The kids had a great time.

Mushroom Experience

I have had mushroom events.   Everyone gets to build a mushroom log and take it home.   This is a great class for mushroom enthusiasts and people Interested in sustainability.

Learn ways to Composting

Learn about composting and worm farms.  Build your own worm farm.   We actively compost using all different methods.  Vermicompost, bokashi, static pile, and one using solder flies.  I like to use different composting methods to ensure I am getting the benefits of each one.

Nature Works

The Nature Works workshops are very popular.  Each class focuses on one plant.  During the class students receive a plant, learn how to grow it and harvest it.   Then learn about its benefits and how to incorporate it into their daily routine.   The highlight of the program is the tasting.  The last part of the class students taste products, such as, teas, kombuchas, flavored vodka, tincture and bath products. The attendees go wild.
